Slippery when Wet - A Guide to canyoning the Sierra Nevada

Author: New guidebook from Rick Ianniello for the Sierra…

Language: English

This guide covers 67 of the best technical canyon routes from the Kern to the Feather River, with descriptions, maps, and hundreds of color photographs. Routes range from quick day trips to multi-day canyoning expeditions. Also includes extensive discussion and instructions on predicting and estimating waterflow in the region's canyons.

California's Sierra Nevada is home to some of the best swift water canyoning in North America. Creeks and rivers carve gorges with clear water, hidden waterfalls, cliff jumps and natural waterslides. Each spring, snowmelt turns these creeks into raging, deadly torrents, until the snow diminishes sometimes leaving trickling streams in the fall.

This book describes over 60 routes from short jaunts to multi-day excursions, with hundreds of color photographs, topo maps, and route descriptions.

The purpose of this book is to assist experienced canyoneers with trip selection, planning, and access for these routes. Route descriptions include significant obstacles, longest rappel, approximate number of rappels, access difficulty, approximate times, and instructions for driving and hiking access. The level of water flow is often the most important factor in difficulty of these canyons, and this book focuses on helping the reader access the canyon at their desired flow. Detailed instruction for planning dates and trips based on snowpack, and estimating flow levels by online gauges, and in person are included.
